A History Of Surgical Attire

Most people refer to the clothes that doctors, nurses, dentists and anyone else working in the medical field wear as “scrubs”, or in the United Kingdom they are often reffered to as “Theatre Blues”. What most people don’t know is the official name is “cleanroom clothing”.

Until well into the twentieth century, surgeries were performed in an operating theatre, (which was a sterile theatre with tiers for medical students to watch the surgery being performed) wearing normal clothes with only a butcher’s apron to keep blood from staining their clothes. They used non-sterile instruments such as reusable hand threaded needles for stitches and packing gauze made from the scraps of cotton that were swept from the floors of cotton mills. Many surgeons opted not to wear a butcher’s apron, because the more blood and fluid on the surgeon’s clothes, the more successful the surgeon was known to be.

In 1918, with the spread of the Spanish Flu, many surgeons began wearing cotton masks, not for the patient’s protection from developing infection during surgery, but for the surgeon’s protection from catching any illnesses the patient may have.

During the same time, theatre workers began wearing rubber gloves to clean the equipment. Surgeons were encouraged to do the same, and eventually gave in and adopted the same practice.

It wasn’t until the 1940′s that the practice of wearing cleanroom clothing, or scrubs, was integrated. It was at the same time that the equipment being used for surgery were routinely sterilized as well.

The scrubs were alway white in the beginning to emphasize cleanliness. But the combination of white scrubs, bright lights and the white room gave the doctors eye strain. By the 1950′s and 1960′s green scrubs had replaced the white ones.

Even after all of these advances in surgical attire, it wasn’t until the 1970′s that the cleanroom clothing we know today was adopted.

  • Lubricate your chain every three or four rides. The best method is to over-lubricate and then wipe off the excess. Failure to lube the chain will cause it to wear out sooner, but replacing the chain is the least of your worries. It will also cause your cassette to wear out sooner, and that’s much more expensive to replace.
  • Check bolts monthly and tighten as needed, using a torque wrench. Don’t over-tighten. The worst case scenario if your bolts aren’t properly tightened is a serious accident: A handlebar or crankarm falling off can lead to tragedy.
  • Know how to fix a flat. It’s the most common on-the-road problem and can leave you stranded.
